Getting the perfect shot requires a lot of meticulous calculations on the depth, angle and creative properties of a picture. But sometimes (or most of the times) all you need is the perfect lighting condition. If you want to achieve that soft glow in your photographs then this DIY tutorial for a flash diffuser is perfect for you. Follow the simple instructions and you're on your way to a beautiful photo.

  • Cut a piece of your mat board half an inch wide and wrap it around flash head and hold it together by stapling the ends. This will hold the diffuser on to the flash.
  • Download the template and stick it in your black/white mat board. Tape the template to the white side of the mat board. Cut on the solid lines and fold on the dotted ones.
  • Make two vertical cuts from the bottom of the template. These cuts should go all the way through the mat board.
  • With the template still taped to the white side of the mat board, use the knife to make little punctures along the diagonal dotted lines that start where your vertical cut stopped and that go downward toward the outside of the template. These punctures will tell you where to score the board for folding later.
  • Remove the template from the white side and re-tape it on the opposite side. This time, use the knife to make little punctures along all the dotted lines except for the two diagonal ones you traced on the white side.
  • Using a ruler and your knife, trace the punch lines you made. Make shallow cuts that go roughly halfway through the board. Do this for all the punch lines on the black side.
  • On the white part of the mat board, trace the two diagonal punch lines on the white side. These cuts will allow the board to make sharp folds without excessive bending.
  • Fold along the lines you cut. Keep in mind that you are making a convex shape that wraps around the white part of the mat board. Tape the bottom of the reflector to the outside of the band on #1.
  • Finally, bend the top flap and the wings. Use tape to hold them in place. You can also tape the ends of the mat board to avoid it from splitting from constant use.
