DIY Off-Camera Light Kit

The struggling artist's worst nightmare: with talent, no equipment. Photographers on a tight budget will rejoice with this DIY Off-Camera Light Kit dubbed as SSO-CLK. All you need are the following:

A collapsible light (Bogen 3373) stand that is in the neighborhood of $55. Add more portability by drilling a hole in it to hold a strap.

Next, an umbrella adapter roughly $15 with a shoe-mount. It holds (what else) your umbrella. Just make sure that if the shoe-mount is made of metal put a piece of electrical tape on top of it where the flash is suppose to be to avoid messing up the electronics. You already have your umbrella adapter so put it to good use by getting an umbrella. A 43" double fold would cost you about $20.

The Nikon SB-24 is ideal for this bargain set-up. It gets you full manual control in whole stops, down to 1/16th power, an industry standard external PC synch, internally power-zoomed flash head (covering 24mm to 85mm beam spreads), a jack for an external high-power battery for one-second, full-power manual recycle times, auto and TTL functions, and high build quality.

A snoot made out of a cereal box is an effective but cheap way to gain control of lighting. To connect to your camera you can go ahead and build yourself a synch cord, but a set of Pocket Wizards is a much better option. Hold them together using a pair of 8" ball bungees that you can get for less than $1.
