Oriskany
Oriskany

It's not really anything impressive, photographically speaking, but definitely impressive to see.  Last week the Navy sunk the decommissioned Aircraft Carrier, Oriskany off the coast of Pensacola Florida.  They sunk the ship with the intent of helping to grow a solid reef around it.  The preparation was extensive as they had to figure out how to scuttle the ship, so that as it sank (around 200 feet) it would settle on the bottom in an 'upright' orientation.  Officials believed it may take up to five hours for the ship to sink - they were surprised when it was gone in little more than a half an hour.

The link at the bottom takes you to an explanation of the event as well as some background.  The rest of the page has several semi-high resolution photographs of the detonation of the ship, and it's 'progress' as it slips beneath the water.  It's pretty interesting to see, if not a bit creepy too.
