If I am to make a list of the things I love the most, these two will
definitely make the top ten - Summer and Anime. First, who hates
summer?! No homeworks to tackle, no class bully to avoid, and no
worries of staying up late because you have to wake up early tomorrow for
class; the only downside is, boredom. On the other hand, who doesn't love
Animes?! Don't go telling me it's kid stuff, I used to handle a column
space and most of the quotes I used were from animes, like Kira
Yamato's (Google him) "If we don't do anything just because we think it won't do something, then we just did worse than nothing". The downside, you can only enjoy them so much.
So
what can we do with these downsides? Well, try to find a way to hit 'em
two birds with one stone; use the spare time (spare equates boring) to
learn something that can expand your love for animes, like this neat
trick using Adobe Photoshop (provided by the good people over at TutorialDash). What we have here is a set of steps to
make a real thing appear it's taken right from the frames of an anime
episode. Talk about doing things in reverse right? (Anime creators
stive hard to make their work realistic, and here we are trying to make
real things look, well, anime-istic.)
Interested enough? Here's how it
goes:
Stage 1: Making an outline
1. Choose whatever pic you like. It could be a picture of a guy
wielding a katana, a babe toting a gun, of Jay Leno holding is chin (oh
wait, erase the last option, that one's funny enough as it is). In
here, we'll use an image of a hot ride. Ideally, it should be 1200
pixels wide so they look good when you resize them later.

2. If it's too bright, make it lighter so you can see what you're doing (and to check if you're already messing it up)

3.
Use the pen tool on a new layer and make an outline. After this, use the
airbrush to make it stand out. Don't rush things, you want to be as
delicate as you can with this one. Check the photo on the right side,
see how clear the outline is even without the image?

Here are some tips on using the pen tool:
1.a Aim for the right properties.

1.b Create an anchor point (this is where you'll begin)

1.c
Determine which the next point will be (think connect the dots).
Ideally, it should be a plcae where the curve you're trying to make has
some sort of change. To place this point, click (but don't release) and
drag the mouse around until the curve falls where you want it to.
Practice with different angles and different distances. It usually
works if you make the line tangent to the curve.

1.d
Do the same process. You might encounter dragging the mouse pass the
image, in this case just zoom out so you could drag it far enough.

1.e Right click and pick the tab "Stroke path" for your strokes. Don't forget to delete the path after you stroke it.

After
doing all this (I know it's quite hard, I'm only writing it and it's
making me wince, but it's doable, and the reward later on is great),
your image should look like this:

Stage 2: Shading the outline.
1. On a new layer, make a body base on a new layer.

2. Open another layer and splatter body shadow all over your image. Use the pen tool and fill the path.

3. On another layer, equip your piece with body highlights.

4. After those steps, your project should look, at least, a little like this.

5.
If you're satisfied enough, do the same process again on each part of
your character you want to improve on. In this case the glass, tires,
wheels, muffler, lights, all on new layers.

6. On a new layer, blacken everything that will always be black.

Stage 3: The part that got me salivating (almost wanted me to not finsh this article and do it myself) - Coloring!
1.
Copy the 'body base' layer and put it under the 'body highlight' layer
but above 'body shadows.' Color the copy of 'body base' the color that
you want the car to be. By having the color on a separate layer, you
can change it later and it won't affect the shading at all.

2.
Time to be creative. Remember, you wouldn't love Animes if you don't
have an imaginative mind, and those that have wild imaginations usually
are the brainy ones, so prove that here! Play with the opacity of 'body
highlight,' 'body color,' and 'body shadows' until you get a look you
like.

Stage
4: You can see the checkered flag from here, I know your work is
already good enough, but this is what seperate good from the great -
Details.
1. On a new layer under the 'glass base' layer, make
some black interior silhouettes and reduce the opacity on 'glass base'
so you can see the silhouettes through the glass.

2. Notice how the muffler tip was highlighted, even the license plate was covered. That's detail for you.

There
you have it, that's what you do for you to earn the "uber" word right
before something that's already cool. Go on and unleash the Akira
Toriyama in you!
